You Might Tan or Burn, I Pale.

It is and has been the summer of '11. My previous posts were a tad depressing, but that was winter! (really things have not gotten any better, I'm just going to try not to dwell on it via blog so I'll pretend it's all better). I have always used television as a way to make me feel better. They say television numbs the mind and that is my drug of choice. So in past blog posts I mentioned Nip/Tuck, created by Ryan Murphy. Then I discovered that Glee, yes Glee is also created by Ryan Murphy. That to me was just incredible. Those shows are on two completely different spectrums. Nip/Tuck is this dark, disturbing and very mature show, while Glee is so campy it hurts sometimes.

But when it doesn't disgust you with all the smiling and singing, its a pretty sharp comedic show. I'm also very impressed with some of gay/lesbian/bisexual content which is kind of pushing the limit for a fictional show dealing with teenagers that is so mainstream on a major network (Fox).
At first I only watched the episodes that were a tribute to things I liked such as the Britney Spears episode and the Rocky Horror Picture Show episode.

I couldn't find anything from the Britney episode. When I started to write this blog I thought Glee is so popular I'll be able to find anything I want! But because Glee is popular I can't find anything because of harsh copyright restrictions probably because of its popularity.

But anyhow Glee creators launched a pretty interesting reality show, The Glee Project. It's the search for the next member of glee and its one of best reality shows I have witnessed. I've tried to figure out why it's a more unique spin of the average competition talent show.

1. The Glee Project is it really gives insight to Glee itself. If you watch Glee it's like a behind the scenes. You get to meet a lot of people off screen as well as on. I very much enjoyed behind the scenes guy Zach Woodlee, choreographer of Glee and judge of the Glee Project. I also loved hearing Ian Brennan's take on how each contestant's character would fit into the show. But it was super fascinating to have creator, producer Ryan Murphy as a judge every week for the bottom three contender's "Last Chance Performances."

2. The judges are entertaining in themselves.  I love that in The Glee Project is there's no secrets. Like on America's Next Top Model, you have to tell Tyra what shit goes down during the week or else she just doesn't know- whereas Ryan Murphy, when he's not pursing his lips, is calling you out.

"I heard you got an unexpected smackeroo and cried about it to your mommy"
-losely quoted from Ryan Murphy confronting Cameron Mitchell about his sexuality or lack there of

Nikki Anders, the vocal coach on The Glee Project also called out one of the contenders about being fake to their face. And while I appreciate the judges on their toes and not taking bullshit (most of the time) they're also supportive and kind. Unlike many competition shows The Glee Project gives its contestants all the tools to succeed and judges you afterwards. And since it really is not a singing, dancing, acting competition the criteria can be more puzzling.

And then the last component is luck.

3. The group of contestants. Continuing to compare Top Model to The Glee Project, the first season of Top Model was brilliant. Why? because of the contestants. Each person brought a special something different that blended perfectly for entertainment gold. Reality shows depend on their characters and The Glee Project's first season was on point. However most first seasons are the best because it was never done before and there was no right or wrong way, it's less calculated and more magical. I really doubt half of the first season of Top Model's cast would have been casted for cycle 10 or 12 on just looking at the type of people they cast now.

Here's a few favourite clips:

Homework Assignments were group numbers

Then they filmed a music video

Then the bottom three sung for judges
